Here, you should first think of the search engines, and your web site, as a potential relationship. Next you should think of yourself as "Cupid" or a "Match Maker" who's role is to achieve the creation of a loving relationship.
You want your wallet and your web site to love the search engines for the free traffic and exposure they provide to you. The search engines want to love your web site, for giving quality and valuable content to those who seek information. Search engines are only successful if the results they provide to a conducted search, are highly relevant to the information that was requested.
A lot, if not most of the people making optimization efforts, think they must have the keyword(s) they target, to be furiously injected into their web site(s), in a massive quantity. This is not entirely the case. You see, for the most part it is based more so on the RATIO, or PERCENTAGE of the total word count that the keyword holds. Count the number of times a specific keyword you use is in your site, then count the total number of words your web site has. Divide keyword total, by the total word count, and you will have your percentage. The number of times the keyword is present is a factor, but it's percentage of the content is EQUALLY potent in increasing your rankings. It is clearly something you must balance precisely, with both value of information content, total keyword count, AND the keyword percentage blissfully blending into a symbiotic relationship.
Now, obviously a web site that you are trying to get recognized, should hold to the same standards that the search engines hold for providing results. You should thrive on ensuring your web presence provides VALUE, not just fluff. Give your audience information they likely do not yet know, and they will consider useful. For instance if you were selling a service for credit repair, tell them techniques to improve and REPAIR their credit. Give this as a "Free tips" section, and make it visible in the near top left of your home page.
The next thing you should be doing to improve your search engine keyword rankings, is to use HTML code when you leave your website URL, anywhere you happen to be that allows for it. When you do this, you should also use the keyword(s) you target, to display rather than the URL itself. This means to actually use the keyword(s) as the displayed words, which are clicked to take someone to your site.
Doing this HTML code will cause the search engines to start recognize and provide your website more frequently and consistently, due to this. The more links in HTML which display to the viewer using keywords, is actively developing a closer relationship between your website and the search engine having the knowledge that you are highly relevant to the keyword that someone is searching for.
As always, these are some simple way, you can implement real and measurable improvement right now. I am very grateful that you shared your time with me, and that you used that time ultimately to try to improve, and gain a firmer grip on what you have to do.
